Mittens Pattern for sizes Infant to 4 years

These instructions may be used for either of the 3 sizes. Check yarn and needles for size you wish to make.
(Pictured is infant in maroon and size 1-2 years in white.)
Note: In the instructions for the Hand, on the row where the thumb will be placed, it states to knit 6 sts with a colored yarn. This is because it will be CAREFULLY pulled out later on to create 12 sts for the thumb! These stitches come from the 6 stitches above and below the colored yarn.
Materials:
Infants: 3 ply baby yarn - 3 oz
2 Pairs size 1 knitting needles
Size 1-2 years: Sport weight yarn - 4 oz
2 Pairs size 2 knitting needles
Size 3-4 years: Worsted weight yarn - 5 oz
2 Pairs size 3 knitting needles
Gauge: 6 sts = 1 inch
Cuff:
Cast on 44 sts, on 3 needles (14-14-16)
Join, work ribbing of k1, p1 for 24 rounds.
Decrease round: k2tog 22 times (22sts).
Work 4 rounds ribbing.
Increase round: k1 round increasing 1 st in each of the first 2 sts, then in every 2nd st 10 times (34 sts)
Hand:
K 10 rounds even in stockinette stitch.
With a colored yarn, k6 sts of next round for thumb, slip these sts back to left hand needle, then k again as before, for 17 rounds.

This is how the 6 sts knit with a colored yarn will look after a few rounds of stockinette. A great knitting technique.
First Decrease round: *k2tog, k15, k2tog, k15 (32 sts)
Knit 1 round.
2nd Decrease round: *k2tog, k2; repeat from * to end (24 sts)
Knit 1 round.
3rd Decrease round: *k2tog, k1; repeat from * to end (16 sts)
Knit 1 round.
K2tog 8 times. Break off, leaving atleast a 6 inch tail. Draw end through all 8 stitches twice, pull tight, fasten off.
Thumb:
Draw out colored thread and pick up 6 sts each side;

Pick up before removing the colored yarn by slipping the needle through one post of each stitch.
Then remove the colored yarn.
Arrange these 12 sts on 3 needles.
Join yarn, k 14 rounds even. K2tog 6 times.
Finish the same way as the top of the mitten.
