Baby to Toddler Knit Ribbed Pointy Hat Pattern

Size Infant to 4 years
These instructions may be used for either of the 3 sizes. Check yarn and needles for size you wish to make.
Materials:
Infants - 3 ply baby yarn, 28 g, 170 yds
Knitting Needles size 3
Size 1 year - 4 ply baby yarn, 50 g, 340 yds
Knitting Needles size 4
Size 3-4 years - Worsted weight yarn, 100 g
Knitting Needles size 5
Cast on 98 sts.
Work in Ribbing of k2, p2 for 4 rows.
First row of turned pattern: K6, p2, *k2, p2, repeat from * to within 6 sts of end of row, K the last 6 sts.
Row 2: p6, work ribbing as in row below to within 6 sts of end, p the last 6 sts.
Row 3: Same as first row.
Row 4: k8, work ribbing to within 8 sts of end, k8.
Row 5: p8, work ribbing to within 8 sts of end, p8.
Row 6: Same as 4th row.
Row 7: k10, work ribbing to within 10 sts of end, k10.
Row 8: p10, work ribbing to within 10 sts of end, p10.
Row 9: Same as 7th row.
Row 10: k12, work ribbing to within 12 sts of end, k12.
Row 11: p12, work ribbing to within 12 sts of end, p12.
Row 12: Same as 10th row.
Row 13: k14, work ribbing to within 14 sts of end, k14.
Row 14: p14, work ribbing to within 14 sts of end, p14.
Row 15: Same as 13th row.
Row 16: k16, work ribbing to within 16 sts of end, k16.
Row 17: p 16, work ribbing to within 16 sts of end, p16.
Row 18: Same as 16th row.
Continue in this way to work 2 sts more in the crosswise ridges at beginning and end and 2 sts less in the vertical ribbs at center, every 3 rows until only the center vertical rib of 2 sts remains.
Knit 1 row plain and break off, leaving an 18 in. tail for weaving.
Place 49 sts on each of the 2 needles, beginning at the center and working from right side of last row, weave all sts together. This is the center of the back.
Neck Band
Cast on 10 sts, work ribbing of k1, p1 for 26 in. (large size 28 in). Bind off. Block neck band before sewing on, stretching 4 in. in length.
Finishing
Baste 10 center in. (large size 12 in.) of neck band to lower edge of cap and sew on neatly, leaving ends of band free to tie.
